Although the coffee chain is well known for its drinks, it's also moving into the digital realm. The company plans to role out a mobile payment system by the end of March.
It's introducing a free app for smart phones that allows customers to link prepaid cards to their phones. They can buy coffee with their handsets by calling up an on-screen bar code that Starbucks employees read with a scanner.
The Starbucks group that helped develop the app said they'd noticed that many of Starbucks' customers have smart phones. So they think it will be something people will use. There are also versions of the Starbucks app for iPhones and Blackberries.
